about

CCR075

special reissue on tape for the first time / stream/download/support: peaer.bandcamp.com/album/the-eyes-sink-into-the-skull

"In the summer of 2014, I was in Cortona, Italy in the midst of a somewhat-intensive week's long workshop devoted to developing the musical work of young composers like myself at the time. It was a lovely experience, local fares, beautiful vistas, excellent music, and conversation - the only thing was, I realized how wrong I had been about what I wanted to do.
Not so wrong, I guess, but writing a sonata for viola, however awesome, wasn’t what I really wanted to be doing. I couldn’t shake these demos that I had made just before I had left - the first recordings I had made of original songs that also included myself on drums. “Full band demos” I had called them. It was the first time I had heard my original songs be realized fully, through the rock band prism of bass, drums, vocals, & lo-fidelity. I was having an incredible time meeting composer peers from across the country and the world, but really all I wanted to do was go home and make a record by myself.
Immediately when I got home, one guitar-less month later, I spent two weeks in the attic of the apartment that myself and two friends were renting while we finished school nearby. I recorded all the drums, vocals, bass, guitar and accessories by myself, with little to no expertise (I had seen other drum sets get mic’d before…) and Garageband.
I had always planned on playing shows and forming a band, but was, and am, still consistently floored by the support I/we ended up getting for that little album and the shows that followed. A year later, in 2015, I had asked two of my favorite musicians to make remixes of a song from the album, in theoretical support of a “one year anniversary”. Unfortunately, the timing of that anniversary never came to fruition, until now!

A full four years later, I’m really happy to properly re-introduce this album, along with some new material, reimagined material, and forgotten material.
“the eyes sink into the skull” was a phrase I lifted from a random webpage when I was reading about the stages of decomposition of a human body. The image conjured, although gruesome, captured the introspective nature of the album. This version has been slightly remixed and completely remastered by our beloved Jeremy Kinney.
“the hands and feet turn blue” is another line from that same writing found here. This recording includes a re-recorded version of the song “left/felt” that includes a brand new portion of music, one that was written virtually one year after the original song was written and recorded. Released for the first time here. Also on the collection are two live tracks, from our first official tour as a band in 2016. The two remixes are included as well, a remix of the song “mouther” made by our friend Andrew Schuyler (aka morningstar), and a remix of the song “the dark spot” made by good friend Jacob Sachs-Mishalanie, both originally made in 2015 and have been patiently awaiting release. Finally on the new recordings are two previously unreleased demos that I have made since. Those two songs “happy birthday to me” and “the entire day feels like morning” were recorded on Ableton before being fed into a handheld tape recorder to characterize and color the recording.

Thank you for listening and thank you for your support.
Thank you to Manny and Citrus City for everything. " - Peter Katz, Peaer
